  • The new outdoor artwork destined for the Mere’s Mouth is being commissioned by Norfolk County Council and is one of five new art installations forming the Norfolk Way Art Trail, a      brand new outdoor public art trail spanning 250 miles of Norfolk, England.

  • This initiative is funded by EXPERIENCE, a €23m project co-funded by the Interreg France (Channel) England Programme, which has committed €16m from the European Regional      Development Fund. It is led by Norfolk County Council and runs from September 2019 to June 2023.

  • The money is ringfenced for this specific project only.  As a result, this will not be a cost to the taxpayers of Diss and will not affect the precept.

  • This is an opportunity to enhance an important area of the town for the benefit of the community and become part of a network of art across the County, which is expected to boost      tourism from new visitors to Diss who will be using the trails, visiting the art and supporting local businesses.

  • The project’s overarching goals are to engage local communities, inspire visitors to explore the area; to showcase the unique culture, personality, nature, stories and / or heritage of Diss and for Norfolk to host a dynamic, inclusive art trail - made up of multi-sensory, accessible artworks.

  • The artist brief was put together to reflect feedback received from the community about where they live and their thoughts on new public art in Diss.

  • The artists were asked as part of their applications to consider health and safety, maintenance, accessibility, sustainability and how they will involve local people in the development of the artwork. The winning artist will be commissioned to conduct further public engagement.

  • The Diss Parochial Charity (owner of the Mere’s Mouth) and Diss Town Council      (leases the area) will be represented on the evaluation panel along with representatives of Norfolk County Council and Creative Giants, which will collectively determine the preferred design and community feedback will be considered as part of this process.

  • The funding will also cover ongoing maintenance costs relating to the artwork post installation in Winter 2022.
