If there’s one thing the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us as a community it’s to adapt. So, while we may not be able to commemorate Remembrance Day 2020 in many of the traditional ways, that won’t stop us from honouring those who sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.

On top of the many personal and private tributes we know will be taking place across the town, here are a few things we’ve got planned (with a little help from you):

Remembrance gallery

Perhaps it’s a photograph of a family member taken before heading off to, or returning from, war. Or an image that symbolises, for you, the sentiment of Remembrance Day. Either way, if there’s a photograph of remembrance that you treasure and that you’d like to share, we’d love to include it in our gallery. If it has a local connection, all the better!

Please email your photograph to: towncouncil@diss.gov.uk with the following information:

• Your name

• The title of the photo (if you have one)

• A short description of what’s depicted in the photo

(You will retain ownership of the photo and its copyright. By sending us your photograph you grant us a royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to publish and use the image. We will endeavour to publish your name alongside the photograph wherever possible.)

Remembrance stones

This year, with traditional parades cancelled, school children will be decorating pebbles with poppies to remember our fallen heroes. Once completed, the pebbles will be placed at the war memorial alongside the wreathes at St Mary’s church.

Flying the flag

The Union Jack flag outside the council offices will be raised on Remembrance Sunday and will remain raised throughout the following week in honour of those who sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.
