Remembering privately

6 November 2020

Council Services

Representatives of key local organisations will attend a private and short wreath laying ceremony on Sunday 8th November within the curtilage of St Mary’s church. Due to government guidance, the act of remembrance can no longer be held inside the church.

Reverend Tony Billett will lead the short ceremony, which will conclude with the two minutes silence and the Last Post before the wreath bearers pay their respects to those who fought for our country by individually laying wreaths.

Regrettably, due to COVID-19 and the restrictions around social gatherings, a larger public event is not possible this year. However, photos will be taken and shared through our website and social media channels.

To ensure the Act of Remembrance remains COVID-secure and to minimise the risk of transmission, we respectfully request that members of the public do not attend.

This important day is also being marked by personal and private tributes from members of the community, including schoolchildren who have been decorating stones to place at the war memorial alongside the wreaths at St Mary’s church.

We have been sharing your treasured memories and photos via our social media streams and thank you for your contributions to our Remembrance gallery. We encourage the community to take the time to remember privately in their homes this Sunday or on Wednesday 11th November at 11am.

The Union Jack is being flown outside the Council Offices and on the Park for the next week in honour of those who sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.  There is also a stunning display of poppies Diss Museum and Tommy silhouettes around the town centre kindly installed by our current Honoured Citizen, Andrew Rackham and his team.

“At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”
