Kieran Murphy, who was born in Diss and turned 18 in August 2020, is the latest resident to join Diss Town Council as a councillor. He’s also one of the UK’s youngest town councillors.

Taking the next step

Kieran joined Diss Youth Council in 2017 and became their leader and chairperson. When he turned 18, he decided he wanted to take being a junior town councillor one step further and become a town councillor for Diss.

After talking through his decision with the Town Mayor, Sonia Browne, he attended a full council meeting on Wednesday 16th September 2020 and was co-opted onto Diss Town Council.

A voice for youth

Kieran has lived in Diss all his life and recently graduated from Diss High School where he studied for his A-levels.

He was awarded the Honoured Junior Good Citizen of Diss in 2018 for his work on the youth council and his work within Diss High School and the surrounding community.

He said: “I have always had an interest in Diss as a town, and I wish to represent the young people of Diss on the council, ensuring they have a voice.

“Without many expectations I applied and attended the full council meeting. After a short interview I was unanimously voted onto the council.”

Councillor Kieran Murphy's appointment further enriches the diversity of the council.

“On behalf of the council, I would like to thank Kieran for applying to become a Diss Town Councillor," says Council Leader, Simon Olander. "His experience as chairperson of Diss Youth Council puts him in a strong position to become a very capable councillor and a great spokesperson for the young people of Diss."

A vision for the future

In his role as chairperson of Diss Youth Council, Kieran helped deliver a range of successful fundraising events. He has a clear vision on what he wants to achieve over the next three years. And he’s looking forward to working with residents and young people to improve the town and make it a better place for everyone.
